DES GOALS & OBJECTIVES FOR 2007 BIENNIUM

  1. Ensure that a Comprehensive Emergency Management program exists in Montana to save lives and property.

    * Improve planning & training at the local, tribal and state government levels for all hazard emergencies

    • Completed three table top exercises on media relations, public information, technical assistance, resource management, donations management, and financial management in preparation for a large scale exercise in November 2002. Attended by state, local, federal, tribal, volunteer and private industry representatives.

    • Coordinated Homeland Security Task Force meetings.

    * Assist local governments with response to emergencies and disasters.
     
    • Sponsored the State Emergency Response Commission "SERC/TERC/LEPC conference for Hazardous Materials and Terrorism incident response.

    * Interface with the federal government to provide technical and financial assistance to the State, local, and tribal communities

    • Submitted and received approval for U.S. Dept of Justice grant assistance for terrorism planning, exercising and equipment procurement for state and local governments. 

    • Submitted and received approval for U.S. Dept of Transportation Hazardous Materials training and planning funding for the state and local jurisdictions

  2. Reduce human suffering and enhance the recovery of communities after disaster strikes.

    * Assist communities in recovery from disasters by coordinating volunteer, state and federal resources.

    • Coordinated volunteer agencies to provide assistance to individuals affected by natural disaster from the communities of Cut Bank, Havre, Broadus, St. Regis, the Blackfeet Reservation and Canyon Ferry

    • Obtained $940,769 Federal funding for local jurisdictions and electric coops that incurred significant expenses during the June severe storms

    * Encourage implementation of appropriate mitigation measures at the local level to prevent or reduce impacts of future disasters.

    • Sponsored two fourteen hour Pre Disaster Mitigation planning grant workshops resulting in 29 counties and one tribe working on PDM plans which will qualify the jurisdiction for project money.

  3. Provide quality customer service in all our activities.

    * Respond to all inquiries in a timely and professional manner.

    • Developed a network of state public information officers to share and coordinate the dissemination of disaster related information.

    * Take advantage of technology to provide services and information to citizens and local government.
    • Developed a web based Citizen's Guide to Homeland Security.

    • Coordinate Homeland Security Grants
